Ice on the streets, ICE in the sights Fort Wayne protests despite storm

In one of the largest snow storms the region has seen in years, over 150 people
gathered at the Allen County Courthouse in downtown Fort Wayne on Sunday, January
25th to protest the murders committed by ICE in Minneapolis.
The event was hosted by local influencer Fort Wayne Foodslut, who goes by May, as
well as the local branch of Fuerza Unida. This was the second of this kind of protest
held in the month of January. It began at the courthouse, where Foodslut spoke on a
megaphone urging people to continue resisting. “No one is coming to save us.” she
proclaimed. Quotes by Angela Davis and others were also read to the assembled crowd
before the organizers began leading the march.
The group marched through the snow-covered streets of downtown. Because of the
storm, downtown was largely deserted, and allowed the protesters to march freely
through the streets without interference from traffic or the police. Earlier protests
remained contained to the sidewalks. Beginning on Berry Street, the crowd snaked their
way through downtown, moving onto Calhoun, then Douglas, and ending at Harrison
Street.
The group stretched out over multiple blocks and concluded their march at the E. Ross
Adair Federal Building which houses the offices of Senators Todd Young and Jim
Banks. As the last of the group reached the building, further speeches were made by
the organizers in favor of resistance against Trump and MAGA. “The problem is, is that
we outlawed it- but we did not kill it!” one of the speakers said in regards to racism in the
United States. “It has been laying dormant in our society.”
The event ended with the organizers promoting further action. “We are here. And we’re
not going away. And we’re going to keep fighting.” May told the crowd. She encouraged
people to follow her social media pages as well as getting involved with other
organizations like Fuerza Unida and promised more in the future.
